Hiro's Shadow Scout / Cyclops Heroclix Repaint Etc.

As I have mentioned before, I don't know the first thing about Yu-Gi-Oh, but I grabbed a handful of Yu-Gi-Oh Heroclix because I thought they were cool looking.  Here is one them: "Hiro's Shadow Scout." I re-based it, and used the factory paintjob as a base coat and repainted it from there.  I like how this weird little figure turned out.

I also re-based these three other heroclix minis: 2 Yu-Gi-Oh Kinetic Soldiers, and Remac, a DC Comics Heroclix.  The Kinectic Soldiers I slapped a couple of washes on and changed their "eye" color.  

  I figured all of the above would work well for Gamma World or Sci-Fi types of games.  Really, Hiro's Shadow Scout could be used in almost any genre or setting that includes weird creatures.

Asgard Cockatrice FM12

If you've been following my blog since it started, you'll know that I'm a big fan of Asgard Miniatures, particularly there line of fantasy monsters.  There's just something charming about them.  I just got a chance to paint Asgard's cockatrice, that mythological creature that is a mixture of a rooster and a dragon.  According to the Lost Minis Wiki, they made two versions of this creature and this is version 1.  I've never seen the other and the wiki only has a drawing. 

Most cockatrice miniatures have a more menacing, usually more draconic head.  The fact that this one's head looks like a regular old rooster sets it apart.

I'm most happy with the rooster part.  I think that part turned out well.  The body is ok.  It didn't have much texture so I painted it by stippling various shades of green.  The wings on the other hand didn't turn out as well as I had hoped they would.  If I had to do it over I think I would use more naturalistic colors, rather than the green I went with here.  Oh well.

I had a lot of fun painting this beasty and I'm anxious to get back to my painting table, but I'm not sure what's next, so stay tuned.

Walloping Krong and Low Life Miniatures Group Shot

I present to you the final miniature in the Low Life miniatures set that I have been working on, Walloping Krong, the cremefillian bunskicker.  He's basically a mutant twinkie with a flaming warhammer. Yay!

 For better or worse I made the decision to paint the flame without attempting attempting "object source lighting" i.e. showing the light or color of the flame reflecting on the figure.  It looks a little weird without it, but I often find "osl" to look a little weird too, even when really skilled miniature painters do it.  Overall I'm pretty happy with this piece.

Sangan Heroclix Repaint

I'm back with a quick repaint of a Yu-Gi-Oh! heroclix figure called Sangan.  I use the term "repaint" a bit loosely as I basically took the factory paint job as a base coat, added a wash or two and some highlights.  I love this quirky little critter though.  Lots of personality and I thought he would work well in a Gamma World encounter at some point.  (I know very little about Yu-Gi-Oh but I picked up a handful of the series one heroclix, that I thought looked cool, to re-base and touch up.) 

Here's the factory paint job, after I re-based him but before I did any painting.

Pandalope the Panderer

Here is the 2nd to last figure of the initial set of Low Life miniatures that I've been chipping away at: Pandalope the Panderer.

I guess he's supposed to be like a mutant panda pimp.  I decided to paint his face like that of a red panda rather than the usual black and white, giant panda as seen in Andy Hopp's illustration.

I also based the color scheme of his clothes on the primary colors of Doctor Strange.  It would be cool if this makes him look more like a sorcerer and less like a pimp, but either way I thought it was good color scheme.

Just one more Low Life miniature on my painting table, a mutant humanoid Twinkie with a flaming warhammer, yay!  And lots of other figures to come.  Stay tuned.

The Sockstrosity and More

I bring you another of the Low Life miniatures that I have been working on, for what seems like forever at this point.  I now have two left to paint if you are keeping track.  This one is the Sockstrosity.  Probably my least favorite in the set.  It's basically a big sock knitting more socks while sitting on a chair mounted on a reptilian creature. Just everyday normal stuff.

I also made visual representations of powers for my friend's 4th edition Psion character: force shard and static mote.  Force shard is a few pieces of "sea glass" that I painted with a wash or two, and the static mote is just a marble on a base.  I think they look kind of cool though, and hopefully they will come in handy for her.

And finally this is a scan of the drawing that Matthew Allison sent me in exchange for the Cankor mini from my last post. Yay!

Cankor

I'm back with a quickly painted superhero figure.  This miniature is based on a character called Cankor, from a recently produced surreal indie comic of the same name.  He was created by comic artist, Matthew Allison and you can see his work at http://loafdish.blogspot.com/.

Inspired by Allison's weirdo comic, I started with a "Tarantula" figure from Old Glory's Superfigs line.  I filled in the eyes with green stuff before priming.  Ideally the body would have a little less muscle definition, but what the heck.

I tried to keep the colors light but still have some contrast and shading.  I have to say it was fun painting a miniature that wasn't covered in lots of little doohickeys and details, because I was able to finish it pretty fast.

 The other cool thing about this mini is that I sent a picture of it to Matthew Allison and he liked and it looks like he's going to trade me a piece of art for it.  Yay!

Byulunculus the Vigilant

I present to you Byulunculus the Vigilant: Pile Crime Clobberer, another mini in the initial set of Low Life miniatures I've been working on.  There are three left now if you are keeping count.

I did not stick to the colors seen in the illustration of this guy, but went with a mostly primary color scheme.  I'm a bit frustrated with the photo because the handle on the saw weapon looks really flat where as it is much more shaded in real life.  Red is a pain to photograph sometimes.  The shine on the slug and the little drip is a bit of gloss varnish to make it look at least a little slimy. 

 

Overall I'm fairly happy with how he came out.  I always like painting things with a lot of texture.

 

Stay tuned, I'm not sure yet if my next post will be one of the remaining Low Life figures or one of the other things in my collection begging to be painted.

 

Occifer Gleech

I continue to have the goal of posting on this blog no less than once per calendar month.  Unfortunately,  February came and went without an update.  Hopefully, their won't be any more months this year without a painted miniature to show.

Without further ado, here is the latest from my painting table: Occifer Gleech-Bodul Hoink. The next in line from the set of Low Life miniatures I've been painting.  Just four left now.

He took forever to paint, because he's got lots of details and I tend to work pretty slowly.

Here is Andy Hopp's illustration which I referred to while painting.  I did make some color changes when I felt the need however.

One-Eyed Croach

Here is the next Low Life Miniature in the batch: The Mysterious One-Eyed Croach: Croach Smellcaster.

 

 This is a weird one even for the Low Life figures, so I included the official illustration by Andy Hopp in the top right corner of this picture.  I made the hat and cloak a little more red-violet but otherwise tried to stick pretty close to the drawing.  It was more fun to paint than I expected for some reason.  I enjoyed painting that big old eyeball.  

There are five more miniatures in this set which I intend to finish, and a few more things primed and ready to go on my table so stay tuned!
